About Her Short Story
Cerulean Blue by Kayleigh Fan
Mazu Mai has spent 273 days mourning the loss of her best friend—alone. No one bothers her at the Graveyard of Galaxies…that is until one night when she meets the ghost of a dead cerulean star who grants her a wish for watching him fall out of the sky. Together, they embark on a journey to honor the memory of her late best friend on the eve of his birthday, encountering bioluminescent flowers and moon jellyfish along the way.
But just as Mazu starts smiling for the first time since the tragedy, they head to the ocean, where she learns she must say goodbye yet again—because the ghost boy can’t stay forever and Mazu can’t keep running away from reality. In this heartfelt short story inspired by Chinese lore, discover the kind of hope that can sprout from even the most painful of goodbyes.
