Discover the Next Generation of Christian Storytellers…

The eighth edition of Voices of the Future weaves together short stories of myth and memory in a memorable and heartwarming collection. Experience the next generation’s creativity and vision through tales from rising young creatives.

Featuring Ashley DeWick

Ashley DeWick grew up in a homeschooling Navy family that moved multiple times a year, and graduated in the crazy chaos of Covid. She writes middle grade fiction to show courageous young readers that wonder still whirls in an out-of-whack world. When not agonizing over character names or inventing nonsensical worlds filled with imaginary creatures, you can find her adventuring with her husband, fangirling about dragons, or squeaking like a dolphin over the newest tiny thing she found.

About Her Short Story

In Melody’s Memory by Ashley DeWick

Old Man Zach is struggling to move forward after his beloved wife Melody passed several months ago. She’d longed to throw a garden party for their neighbors on her birthday—which is this weekend. However, Zach can’t bear the idea of facing the outside world just yet, much less hosting a party for a bunch of people.

But with the gentle encouragement of his best friend, Alphaeus the fruit dragon, he builds up the courage to repair their garden and the little cottage since overgrown by weeds, and just take one small step at a time until he’s ready for visitors.

Right when he starts, however, pests invade and begin destroying the garden so dear to his wife. There’s no way he and Alphaeus can stop it alone—but if they can’t fix this, the garden will die, along with his wife’s last wish.

It’s now or never—but how can he beg the aid of the neighbors he’s always avoided?
