Discover the Next Generation of Christian Storytellers…
Featuring Kristianne Hassman
Kristianne Hassman grew up exploring the highvelds and mountains of South Africa as a third-culture kid, which fed her love for books—and adventure—from a young age. She writes historically inspired stories, infused with themes of hope and belonging, about young heroines discovering their place in the world.
When she’s not writing, you can usually find her getting distracted by new classical music she’s discovered, drinking copious amounts of chai tea, or visiting a new country on her bucket list.
About Her Short Story
Flore longs to escape her tiny island home of Lipari.
Growing up listening to Mamma’s stories, Flore has dreamed of the day she could travel to grand cities like Paris, Rome, and London. With her eighteenth birthday and Mamma’s promised tour of the mainland on the horizon, that dream is finally almost a reality. But when Mamma’s chronic illness suddenly relapses, the trip is canceled.
After Flore discovers an abandoned sailboat washed up on shore, it seems like a sign. She spends every moment fixing it up to surprise Mamma, dreaming of the day she can finally experience the magic of far-off cities.
But as Mamma worsens, Flore can’t keep denying the truth–her mother might not ever be able to make the journey. She must decide whether to keep clinging to her old dream, or find a way to make one last trip–a different kind of voyage–special for Mamma.
